Are you thinking about how you will form it in the context of what you already know? For many people, this is so habitual, it’s become an unconscious reaction. They’re always referencing what they know into new information presented. Many people spend their lives dwelling on the past or living in the future. In doing so, they miss so many great things right in front of them. In my own journey, learning how to get present was a major step forward in my healing that later showed up everywhere else in my life.

Months ago, I began salsa dancing after attending a friend’s birthday party. She’s heavily involved in the salsa scene and there were a lot of dancers at her party. It had been 10 years since I last danced and I mainly forgot everything, save a few steps. I did a minimal amount of dancing at the party. I was invited to a salsa social later that month where I was reintroduced to the basic steps and even learned some new ones. After attending another salsa social, I started going out regular nights around town where I got more experience and became a better lead (good leaders make better dancers). I even took a couple lessons to help me with my leading which completely changed everything. Along the way of being a salsa dancer, the awareness of presence showed up. Because salsa dancing is a partner dance, it works best with both people are engaged. I found that you can’t be a good lead and not be present with you partner. There will never be a good dance without both people present. I learned a lot of things from salsa, this being one.

Being present is one of the most important things you can do in your life. Whenever I coach people, one of the very first things I do is get them to get present to what’s going on in their life now. Many people want to focus on things that happened in their past. While that may have an effect on what’s going on, it’s important to know how you feel here and now. Once I know where they are, I can begin to walk them through their transition. People get stuck in the old belief patterns and tend to get stuck in the past or future. It’s no wonder you have people who ramble on about their “glory days” or have destination addictions. You can’t solve problems living in the past. Our subconscious mind is designed to keep us safe. When we’re present, we feel all sorts of new emotions that leave us feeling vulnerable. Once we get present to those feelings, we can clear the beliefs around them to allow us to truly be with ourselves wholly. When we are truly present, we can create with the highest and best energy and intention. Books like Eckhart Tolle’s The Power of Now and Spencer Johnson’s The Present were written to get people to become aware of what happens when you’re present in your daily life. I recommend both books.

Much like my journey with salsa dancing, you can learn to be present in every area of your life. Salsa actually taught me how to be present and what being present really meant. That lesson can taken and applied anywhere in your life. What would that look like in your career or business? Your relationships? This is where you get to be the creator of your own like.
